English teaching is evolving very quickly due to the role of the internet and social media in our everyday lives. Medwell et al. (2021) recommend that we expand the definition of literacy beyond reading and writing in the traditional forms, to include literacy experiences of electronic reading and writing. The term 'digital literacy' was coined in 1997 by Gilster, who defined it as 'the ability to both understand and use digitised information'.
